2.20. Check and adjustment of gaps in valves (except the M40 engine)

GENERAL INFORMATION

Valves are recommended to be adjusted on the heated-up engine. Check of gaps is allowed also on the cold engine (see subsection 2.1).
PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Warm up the engine and uncover a head of cylinders (see subsection 3.1.5).
2. Install the piston of the 1st cylinder in compression step VMT (see subsection 3.1.4).
3. In this position of the crankshaft check gaps of valves of the 1st cylinder.
4. Gaps are measured in valves by the probe laid between an end face of the valve and the adjusting clown of the corresponding yoke. The probe has to move under small effort.
5. In need of adjustment release a lock-nut and adjust a gap, turning the clown the piece of a thick wire inserted into his opening.
6. Holding the clown, tighten a lock-nut and again check a gap.
7. On M10 engines adjust other valves as 1–3–4–2. Turn the crankshaft on 180 ° clockwise and adjust valves of the 3rd cylinder. Repeat adjustment for valves of other cylinders.
8. On M20 and M30 engines valves are adjusted as 1–5–3–6–2–4. After adjustment of valves of the 1st cylinder turn the crankshaft on 120 ° clockwise and adjust valves of the 5th cylinder. Repeat adjustment for valves of other cylinders.
9. Establish a cover of a head of cylinders, having replaced laying.
